Here is my preview of the ATP 250 of Umag (Plava Laguna Croatia Open).

Umag is played on slow CLAY courts.

 Speed Data

These are the statistics of the last two years:

  • 67.4% Points won on first serve
  • 74.3% Service games held
  • 0.23 Aces/Game
  • 0.11 Tie-breaks/Set

The conditions of Umag are quite on the slow side.

Previous winners

  • 2025: Darderi d. Taberner
  • 2024: F. Cerundolo d. Musetti
  • 2023: Popyrin d. Wawrin
  • 2022: Sinner f. Alcaraz
  • 2021: Alcaraz d. Gasquet

There have been 22 different winners in the last 22 years!

Carlos Moyá won the tournament 5 times, 3 of them in a row, from 2001 to 2003.

Weather

Next week in Umag is expected to be hot and mostly dry, with daytime temperatures ranging from 32–34°C (90–94°F) and overnight lows of 19–22°C (66–72°F). Humidity should be moderate, feeling a bit higher over the weekend before easing slightly from Monday onward, while light to moderate winds of around 10–20 km/h (6–12 mph) are forecast for most days. Aside from a slight chance of thunderstorms late Saturday into early Sunday, the outlook is predominantly sunny with plenty of warm, stable weather.

Main draw matches in Umag usually start in the late afternoon due to the heat and humidity.

Player's quotes

De Jong, 2025: "The courts are so terrible this year, it's almost dangerous. It's quite shocking. We always have to fill out a tournament evaluation. But I can't imagine anyone saying the courts here are normal."

Darderi, 2025: "It’s my second year here. Playing at night, it’s a little slower and different."

Kopriva, 2025: "Right now, I’m really exhausted because of the weather. The beginning wasn’t as great as expected and it took some energy to get back into it. But after the sunset, it was better. It’s tough conditions here, playing first on."

Wawrinka, 2023: “I really enjoy playing in this atmosphere. I played a great match to make the semifinal. He is a tough player. I played well in slow conditions. My game is there.”

Alcaraz, 2023: “It's not easy to play here, because the humidity is so high.”

Gasquet, 2023: “It's always tough to play with this heat and humidity, it's a battle for everybody.”

Haase, 2018: “It was very humid, the conditions on the court were difficult and we spent a lot of energy while playing.”

Summary

Very slow conditions, suitable for clay courts specialists.

The weather can be an important factor, as the hot and the humidity use to be high in the first matches of the day, that start in the afternoon.

If you have been betting for a while, you may have heard that there have been very suspicious results in Umag in the past. Umag has always been talked about as one of those tournaments where strange things happen. But honestly, I can't say if the suspicions are justified. At anycase, I think this was more in the past, not in recent years.

Remember that surface transitions are always tricky, especially from grass to clay.
