Basel 2026 - ATP 500 Preview
(26 October - 1 November) Basel is the 5th fastest court on tour and a bit quicker than Vienna. But the bounce is high, so the slice is less effective than on other indoor courts.
This is my Preview of the ATP 500 of Basel (Swiss Indoors Basel). I will send you the preview of Vienna, the other tournament that is being played this week, in a couple of hours.
Basel is played on indoor hard courts.
Here are the statistics of the last 4 years. 2021 was not played.
- 75.0% of points won on the first serve
- 85.2% of service games held
- 0.65 aces/game
- 0.27 tie-breaks/set
These numbers suggest very high-speed conditions. If we take the last five years, it is ranked 5th.
Basel is situated at 285 meters above sea level. It's not a high altitude, but every little bit helps and contributes to making the court conditions faster.
In the 12 qualifying matches played so far in 2025, we have had 74.3% point won on 1st serve.
Previous winners
2025: Fonseca d. Davidovich
2024: Mpetshi-Perricard d. Shelton
2023: Auger-Aliassime d. Hurkacz
2022: Auger-Aliassime d. Rune
2019: Federer d. De Minaur
Federer has won this tournament 10 times!! and Auger-Aliassime and Del Potro twice.
Weather
This week, Basel is forecast to see highs of 11–19°C (52–66°F) and lows of 3–10°C (37–50°F), with Tuesday the warmest day. Expect a mix of sunshine and cloud, a chance of occasional rain, and relative humidity around 60–80%.
Weather not that important on indoor courts.
Player Statements
Davidovich, 2025: "It’s not easy to adjust from Brussels. I only had one day to practice, and it was on another court with a different speed. The centre court is slower, and the balls are getting heavy."
Fritz, 2025: "For me, I’ve always enjoyed coming here. I’ve always felt the conditions in Basel suited me better. I was actually shocked by how fast it is this year — I remembered it being quicker than Vienna, but it’s even faster than I thought. I like it, though. I’m excited to play in these conditions, and I’ve always really enjoyed this tournament."
Mpetshi-Perricard, 2024: "On this surface, of course my serve is a good weapon for me, but I try to be aggressive from the baseline and put some pressure on the opponent. I’m very happy [because it was] a big part of my game this week."
Shelton, 2024: "I went into it with a lot of confidence with how I've been playing. This is a surface I feel comfortable on and my game is coming together."
Auger-Aliassime, 2023: "I think the conditions suit me. "It's quite fast and if I hit the forehand well I feel I can get my opponent in trouble."
Alcaraz, 2022: "For me, it's a bit slower than the other tournaments. But obviously I had to handle that, I had to work on my problems and change my tactics a little bit in the second set."
Auger-Aliassime, 2023: "The ball is going pretty fast here, and with a high bounce. The court here plays slightly different to the last couple of weeks so I am slowly adjusting to it."
Summary
Quick indoor courts, as the data shows. The 5th quickest on the circuit if we take the data of the last 5 years.
In contrast to other hard indoor courts, the bounce of the ball here is quite high, so the slice is not as effective here.
Tournament suitable for big servers and big hitters.
Overall, a bit quicker than Vienna, but quite similar conditions.
