Here is my preview of the ATP 250 in Bastad (Nordea Open).

Bastad is played on slow Clay courts.

Speed data

These are the statistics for the last five years:

  • 67.2% Points won on first serve
  • 74.6% Service games held
  • 0.28 Aces/Game
  • 0.15 Tie-breaks/Set

According to these numbers, the conditions in Bastad fall within a medium-slow speed range among all clay courts.

Previous winners

  • 2025: Darderi d. De Jong
  • 2024: Borges d. Nadal
  • 2023: Rublev d. Ruud
  • 2022: Cerundolo d. Baez
  • 2021: Ruud d. Coria

Ferrer has won the tournament 3 times. There has been a different winner in the last 10 years.

Weather

Expect a warm and mostly dry week in Båstad, with daytime temperatures generally ranging from 22–28°C (72–83°F) and cool nights around 10–14°C (50–57°F). Winds should stay mostly light to moderate at 10–20 km/h (6–12 mph), with only occasional slightly stronger breezes, while relative humidity will generally range between 60–75%, rising a bit in the mornings and ahead of the slight chance of showers on Saturday. Overall, conditions look very pleasant, with plenty of sunshine and little risk of weather interruptions until the weekend.

Player's quotes

Darderi, 2025: "The court is really slow. It’s really different to Munich, where I was yesterday, but there was also a bit of altitude there."

Tennis TV commentator, 2024: "Carballes Baena is difficult to get the ball through on a slow heavy court like this one."

Ruud, 2023: "Difficult with the wind. Conditions were a bit challenging but I managed to do good enough. Today the wind changed all the time. The wind grabs the ball a little bit. I'm used to it. In Norway we have wind as well."

Cerundolo, 2022: The court is like in Buenos Aires, it's slow and windy."

Carreno Busta, 2022: “The weather is good. It's not very hot on court but it is very windy. Sometimes it's very difficult to bo ready to hit the ball."

Djere, 2022: "The conditions are tough for me. The wind and a slippery court is difficult for me but I think I showed a good match today.”

Karatsev, 2022: “It was so windy during the match, and with the sun going down it was tricky.”

Lindell, 2019: “The stadium is just a few hundred yards from the beach and wind has been known to cause problems in the past. The centre court differs a lot from those in the harbour. It is not easy when the wind blows .... a completely different game.”

Summary

In general, in tournaments played by the sea, conditions tend to be very heavy, with high humidity and a lot of wind. And Bastad is no exception. We can see this in the players' statements.

And when the wind comes into play, the probability of upsets increases, as is logical.

The transition from grass to clay is challenging, so it's important to consider how much time each player has had to adapt to the surface
