Miami Open 2026 Preview: Fast Courts, Complex Conditions
(18 - 29 March) Miami Open plays faster than Indian Wells — but conditions shift dramatically between day and night. Wind, humidity, and court selection specially matter here.
Here is my Preview of the Miami Masters 1000 tournament.
Miami is played on Outdoor Hard courts, but the conditions are not that simple.
Speed Data
These are the averages of the last 5 editions (main draw):
- Points won on the first serve: 72.2%
- Service Holds: 81.0%
- Aces/Game: 0.55
- TB/Set: 0.21
In 2023, the tournament director, James Blake, said that the courts would be faster compared to the previous year. He also added the following:
"Laykold is such a well-respected company with a proven track record and that's why we trust that they're going to do a great job of making sure that the courts are exactly what we ask for. If we ask them to speed up the courts a tiny bit or to slow them down a little, Laykold always delivers the pace we require. Our experience of working with them over the years has been really positive. The court is such an important part of the player's experience: we need to take it seriously and we absolutely do."
- Points won on the 1st serve in 2022, 2023 and 2024, 2025 respectively (Main draw): 71.1%, 73.2%, 72.4%. 73.4%
- Points won on the 1st serve in 2022, 2023 and 2024, 2025 respectively (Qualies): 60.9%, 73.3%, 71.8%, 71.8%. 71.6% in 2026.
The increase in speed conditions between 2022 and 2023 is clear, as James Blake said.
The qualifying data for first-serve points won (71.6%) in 2026 shows figures very similar to last year’s (71.8%).

Weather
The weather for the next 10 days in Miami features daytime temperatures between 73–80°F (23–27°C) and evening temperatures between 61–71°F (16–22°C). From March 18 to March 20, daytime winds are strong at 16–20 mph (26–32 km/h) with humidity around 60–78%. As the week progresses, the wind slows to 11–15 mph (18–24 km/h) during the day and 8–12 mph (13–19 km/h) in the evening. Humidity increases at night, reaching levels between 70% and 82%. The skies are mostly clear after the first few days, though some passing clouds remain common in the afternoons.
Player Quotes
Fritz, 2026: "I played really well here last year. It's the kind of tennis I like playing. A lot of that has to do with the court speed as well. It was pretty fast so you get rewarded when you took risks and hit good shots. It was a good serving court and when I wanted to take my chances and pull the trigger, I'd get rewarded."
Darderi, 2026: "Compared to other places, in Indian Wells the conditions are faster during the day and very slow in the evening. The balls open up more and the courts are different. Here in Miami I remember from last year that in general the courts are a little faster."
Mensik, 2026: "The truth is that the conditions here in Miami fit perfectly with my game, they match really well with how I play. Starting with my serve, for example, which becomes much faster than last week in Indian Wells. The heat and the overall temperature make my game go up an extra level, this helps me quickly pick up the ball rhythm these courts require, I noticed it from the moment I did two training sessions upon arriving here. From the first match, I felt that comfort with all my shots, although I acknowledge that the Center Court is very different from the other courts, but I still found the formula to be effective."
Fritz, 2025: "The only thing I find annoying about playing on center court is how different it is from the other courts" ."It will never be the same as the other courts because they are placed on a football field. It won't be able to replicate the same as the outdoor courts that are laid on asphalt or concrete. It's set on a field. It will always be a bit different. I would also say that around the time I'm playing or a little before, the shadow that crosses the middle of the court is also extremely bothersome."
Fritz, 2025: "This tournament is always interesting because it guarantees that the center court will be different from the outer courts, it's never the same. It's a fast court, but at night and with the humidity it can become slower, although it's not a court with a very high bounce, quite the opposite, it bounces much less and the court is faster than in Indian Wells."
Carabelli, 2025: "I had a hard time getting started in the game. More than anything, adapting to the Stadium Court, which is quite large, and to the court, which felt much slower than the other courts I'd played on."
Monfils, 2025: "They're different styles. Indian Wells is calmer, the conditions are drier and slower. Here in Miami, everything moves faster—the city, the courts, even the humidity. You need to adapt quickly, or you’ll struggle from the start."
Paul, 2025: "I'm really enjoying the quicker courts this week. It's quite a change-up from Indian Wells. I think most of the American players are enjoying that you get a lot more reward for your shots here."
Medvedev, 2025 (about the balls): "Who allows this? You can't play tennis with them. Who said, 'Yes, we can play with these balls'? Nobody, right? They're not good enough."
Medvedev and the balls. Don't take his comment too serious :-).
Evgeny Donskoy, 2025 (who is assisting Khachanov these days): "Even though they are staying in Indian Wells, Karen is hitting Miami's Dunlop balls during practice and not IW's Penn — the difference is huge."
Monfils, 2024: "With these slower conditions at night, it's a little more complicated to get the ball past him (Alcaraz) as he covers the court so well. There were a lot of balls where I wanted to go into the court, but I couldn't.
Medvedev, 2024 (after beating Norrie): “The court is pretty fast but the balls get old very fast. So at one moment in the rally, you feel like there isn't much you can do, so you can't go for the winner because the risk-reward isn't there. It's the same for the opponent, so we just hit, hit” . “It's not easy to play at night, it felt slower and the serve wasn't counting so much, so there were a few breaks.”
Alcaraz, 2024: “I defended well in the humid conditions. I had to be patient. I had to adapt to the conditions; the ball goes differently to Indian Wells and I had to see how it would be. I'm really happy with my performance and how I hit the ball.”
Ruud, 2024: “Conditions in Miami are always difficult compared to IW.”
Sinner, 2023: “In my opinion they are even faster than last year. The tournament courts maybe even more, except for the Central. I don't know about the Grandstand, but where I played today (Butch Buchholz) it was quite fast. They are definitely different than Indian Wells and I haven't had a lot of time to adjust, two or three days, and the first match is always important.”
Alcaraz, 2023: “Miami court is much faster than Indian Wells but I like it. It helps my aggressive game.”“The court is faster, there is more humidity. Let’s say it’s a little bit tougher too, to get used to the conditions in a short period of days. For me, it’s a totally different tournament.”
Gasquet, 2023: “I served well. The conditions favor me when it's sunny and it bounces. I play much better. When the shadow arrived, the balls were much heavier and there I become quite lazy, I lack a little power and my shots do not bounce.”
Lehecka, 2023: “The conditions suit me much better than in Indian Wells. The surface is a bit faster and the balls are flying more”.
Summary
Overall it's a tournament with fast conditions where the ball bounces low.
That Rafa Nadal has never won here is an indication that the ball doesn't bounce high and that it's not a favorable tournament for players who like to lift.
The weather matter here a lot, and especially at night, with the humidity, the conditions become slower. During the day, in the hottest hours, the humidity can make the conditions very tough. Although unusually high temperatures are not expected this week, forecasts are currently pointing to highs of around 27–28°C (81-82°F).
The wind is also a important factor to consider. It seems it will be strong during the first days. You have tot ake this into account because the chances of upsets are higher with strong winds.
So, in this tournament, whether it's played during the day or at night and the weather will be especially important. During the day, with sun and heat, the ball will go very fast. At night and with humidity, it will be the opposite. In any case, the ball doesn't bounce much.
All in all, totally different conditions from Indian Wells. It's important to have some days to adjust.
It's also very key to know in which court the match is played. As several players have said, the exterior courts are much quicker. The central court is specially slow.
