Madrid 2026 - Masters 1000
(22 April 3 April) The Mutua Madrid Open is played on clay, but altitude makes it the fastest clay Masters: short rallies, high bounce, and a hard-court feel that rewards big servers.
This is my preview of the Madrid Masters 1000 (Mutua Madrid Open).
Speed Data
Madrid is played on clay, but under relatively quick conditions due to the altitude.
Last five years (key stats):
- 71.5% points won on 1st serve
- 80.8% service holds
- 0.44 aces per game
- 0.19 tie-breaks per set
The courts at the Mutua Madrid Open sit at around 600 meters above sea level. That places Madrid — together with Gstaad, Houston, and Geneva — among the fastest clay-court events on the calendar.
Rally length in 2025 averaged just 4.1 shots, significantly lower than Monte Carlo (4.8) and Rome (4.6), and closer to faster hard-court events like Miami or the Paris Masters 1000.

Weather
In Madrid through May 3rd, expect mostly stable and warm conditions, with daytime temperatures generally around 23–28°C (73–82°F) and lows of 11–14°C (52–57°F), slightly above seasonal norms; winds will be light to moderate, around 10–20 km/h (6–12 mph), with occasional increases on unsettled days; most days will be dry and sunny, with some cloud cover and a higher chance of showers around April 25–27 and April 30–May 1, before returning to more stable, mild weather into early May.
Players Quotes
Cerundolo F. (on the match conditions, with the roof closed): "There was a bit more humidity, it was more sweaty, it even looks a bit worse when the roof is closed, there’s less light. It was also faster with the roof closed, then it became a bit slower."
"Here it’s super fast and really suits the big servers, but I’ve beaten some good guys."
Musetti, 2025: "I felt complete different conditions from what I played with during the weekend. Definitely, I was struggling at the beginning to find the rhythm, to find the ball. Here, the balls bounce much higher compared to the other courts. So, I struggled a little bit."
Bublik, 2025: "The conditions definitely help here. Madrid is way faster than the other clay court Masters 1000’s. We basically play indoors which makes it faster. I have no disrespect toward clay but sometimes when you play outdoor it’s a bit rough and rusty. Playing indoors on clay is much more consistent and it’s amazing."
Fils, 2025: "These aren't conditions I love here, so I'll have to find a way to play."
Fritz, 2024: "It bounces very high here, so it's great for me forehand"
Rublev, 2024: "I felt much more confident and freer. I think I’m playing well, I’m particularly happy because of how I’m adapting to the altitude, which isn’t easy and there’s more risk when you hit the ball and I think, despite all of that, I’m still playing at a good level. Today was a good match and we had some quality, fast-paced rallies."
Medvedev, 2024: "For me it is not easy to play here because the training courts are very different from the match courts and, except in the Central court, there is very little space at the back of the court. I did not have rhythm at the beginning today but then I found a good level. On hard courts I can play transition balls without taking risks or accelerating too much, but on clay, if I do that, I immediately start to be dominated and run after the ball. That forces me to hit each ball with power and force, something that is not my style. It is a great challenge for me to play like that."
Humbert, 2024: "I never played well here. Just being in the second round with a bye is my best result. I hadn't played yet and it was already my best result! I've never won a match here, this is the first. I think I can play well at altitude. Already on clay, I proved to myself that I can play well. And at altitude, with an aggressive games, it's not easy to defend because the ball is a little harder to control. However, after a few days of training, it wasn't so bad."
Alcaraz, 2024: "The altitude is good for me. I’ve played in Madrid since I was little and I’m very comfortable. The altitude benefits my game and the energy of the fans really spurs me on."
Machac, 2024: "Conditions are pretty fast here. From the beginning of the match I felt very good, I played with confidence. I have been able to adapt well and I think I played a great game."
Sinner, 2024: "Here in Madrid the conditions are somewhat different compared to other tournaments, because we play with altitude, the ball flies and is quite fast. Before I had a hard time finding my level here, so it will be interesting to see how I can play this year."
Zapata Miralles, 2023: "I think playing at night here the ball goes a little slower, it gets a little heavier. I'm going to have to be a little patient, play orderly and without losing my pattern of playing aggressively. But maybe it is necessary to enter mentally patient because the ball bounces more. I'm going to have to manage the day a little differently than how I'm doing so far."
Cachín, 2023: "The court was different because it was a smaller court and I like it better because you do more damage with the serve."
Baez, 2023: “It can be a little drier. It is a good surface and good conditions to play. I see the altitude as what it is, I can't control it and you have to learn to play in these conditions.”
Fritz, 2023: “It bounces really high here so I was able to kick the ball up to his backhand. I was pleased with the way I was able to change things up and problem solve.”
Lajovic, 2023: “In these conditions, it’s super important to use the kick serve to open up the court. It is really hard to play defence here. I was winning most of the points when I was attacking.”
Davidovich, 2023: “I played on the center court yet this year, but I remember from previous years that the center court was a little slower. However, they are now telling me that they are the same as the outside ones, so I don't know exactly.”
Alcaraz, 2023: “It was tough to get used to the conditions. There is so much altitude and the ball bounces a lot.”
Medvedev, 2023: “It’s not always easy to play here because of the altitude. I’m trying to adapt and prepare my next match. It’s time to fix some small things, make small adjustments and try to play better. Because of the altitude, maybe I can play better in Madrid than in other clay court tournaments.”
Ruud, 2023: "I feel good in the different conditions with altitude, the ball travels a bit faster and flies more. You have to be more careful and control it with more top spin."
Tsitsipas, 2023: “Of course, here we’re dealing with a little bit of altitude, which is a different scenario than Barcelona. I’m getting adjusted to that. It’s something that I’ve done pretty well in the past few years. I like the altitude, I think it’s good for my game. I see that as a small advantage.”
Isner, 2021: "It is my favourite clay court probably. It has an indoor feel even though it's not fully indoors. It's got a great sound to it. The court is fast. To me it doesn't seem like there's too much clay on the court so, of all the clay courts I play on, it plays closest to a hard court of any of them. The altitude in Madrid just really helps my serve. The ball goes through the air very fast. You put all those things together, it's a good recipe for me to do some damage on serve.”
Summary
It's clay but the conditions are quick due to he altitude. The ball travels fast through the air.
During the day, it it's sunny, the conditions are VERY QUICK and the the ball bounces very high.
Big servers and hard court players can do it well here.
On the outer courts, which are smaller, players with better serves can do more damage.
It's more important than usual to be able to train for several days to adapt to the conditions. Keep an eye on this.
