Hamburg 2026 - ATP 500 Review

(17 - 23 May) Slow clay, made slower by weather. Hamburg's humid, rainy week should produce heavy courts where patient clay tennis is rewarded — and where time of day matters more than usual.

This is my Preview of the ATP 500 of Hamburg (the Bitpanda Hamburg Open).

Hamburg is played on slow clay courts.

Speed Data

These are the statistics for the last five years:

  • 68.0% Points won on first serve
  • 76.9% Service games held
  • 0.35 Aces/Game
  • 0.17 Tie-breaks/Set

According to these numbers, the conditions in Hamburg fall within a medium speed range among all clay courts.

  • 2024: Fils d. Zverev
  • 2023: Zverev d. Djere
  • 2022: Musetti d. Alcaraz
  • 2021: Carreño Busta d. Krajinovic

Federer has won the tournament 4 times, and Nadal, Basilashvilli and Leo Mayer twice.

Weather

Hamburg should start the week quite cloudy and a bit unsettled, with some showers possible early in the week and again around Thursday morning, before turning warmer towards Friday and Saturday. Day temperatures are expected to move from around 16–20°C / 61–68°F early in the week to around 23–24°C / 73–76°F later on, with nights mostly between 8–14°C / 46–58°F. Winds should generally be light to moderate, around 10–20 km/h / 6–12 mph, so conditions should not be especially windy.

Player Quotes

Rublev, 2025 (on the heavy conditions with the roof closed): "Of course the conditions were different — heavier ball, heavier court. But it’s the same for everyone. When you come to Germany, you know this can happen: sun, rain, sun, rain — all day like this" ."I like the conditions in Hamburg. I have always played well here."

F. Cerundolo, 2025: "It’s a bit slower here than other tournaments, but I like slower conditions. I actually like both types. I played my whole life in Buenos Aires where it’s super slow, so it’s nothing new for me. But I also played well in Madrid, where it’s super fast."

Darderi, 2025: "I think it’s slower this year because of the cooler weather. Maybe I need to improve my serve and attack more because the court is slower."

Rublev, 2020: “I like these conditions. I like the cold weather. I like when we play outside on clay with the conditions really slow because I know it is going to be long rallies, it is going to be smart.”

Summary

Very slow conditions.

The weather will be important here and should be monitored closely. A humid week, with rain expected during most of the tournament, should make the courts even heavier and the conditions even slower.

And if a match is played at night, this effect can be even stronger.

So, before placing our bets, it will be important to check the court conditions, the humidity, and the time of the match — especially on courts that are already slow by nature.

The more aggressive players with strong serves and who prefer faster courts will have a tough time here.
