  • 2023: Bublik d. Rublev
  • 2022: Hurkacz d. Medvedev
  • 2021: Humbert d. Rublev

Federer has won the tournament 10 times. Bublik twice.

Weather

The week starts cool and ends much warmer. Expect temperatures mostly in the 18–31°C range (64–89°F), with the first few days on the cool side before a significant warm-up from Wednesday onward. Winds should generally be moderate, around 10–20 km/h (6–12 mph), though gusts near 55 km/h (34 mph) are possible early in the week, particularly on Sunday. Relative humidity is likely to be moderate, mostly between 45–65%, occasionally higher around showers. Overall, conditions look increasingly favorable for faster grass-court tennis as the week progresses: cooler and breezier at the start, then warmer, drier and faster from midweek onward.

Player's quotes

Koepfer, 2024: " It's pretty slippery out there. First match on grass, it hasn't been played on yet so it's hard to move. I like moving on grass though, it's not an easy surface to adjust but the confidence is there. So far I've played three good matches, I feel good about my tennis and my serve. It's always helpful to be a lefty on grass. The conditions are different than the practice courts. I think they laid the grass here so it's pretty slick at the beginning."

Shapovalov, 2023: "It’s my first time here but I love the facilities. The court plays amazing, it’s a little different than the practice courts which are quite beat up but the bounce is perfect on centre."

Korda, 2021: "I was struggling a lot with the shadows. It was really difficult at the beginning. Then it kind of leveled out a bit and I got used to the court. I started playing a lot more freely. That was the big difference. It's a little weird. The shadow creeps in and out. And you also have pillars on top so it was a little difficult. I'm happy I remained composed and finished it off."

Federer, 2021: "The court is so fast here, all of a sudden you can be in trouble." "Here in Halle, with the courts protected by the roof, it is slippery and plays fast, so it is always a dangerous tournament to play. I was slipping on the second point so it is different, you can’t move as aggressively as maybe you’d like." "It’s faster here in Halle than they are at Wimbledon."

Federer, 2019: "The court here in Halle is easier to play on than last week in Stuttgart. It’s a bit harder, so the ball bounces up more."

Zverev, 2019: "Stuttgart was much harder and faster. It was rather like a fast hard court actually. And it was also difficult to return. Both are very nice grass courts, of course, but I think Halle tops it."

Summary

Halle is not as fast as Stuttgart, but it is very quick, as we can see in the statistics and player statements.

The week will start cool, more humid. If the ball bounces less on grass, in humid conditions the bounce is even lower, making the game even more difficult and benefiting players who are more comfortable on this surface and those with a good sliced backhand.

As the week advances, the courts will become less tricky.
