Geneva 2026 - APT 250 Preview

(17 - 23 May) Clay on paper, fast in practice. At about 400m altitude, Geneva plays among the quickest clay weeks on tour. The second half of the week should play even quicker as temperatures rise.

Weather

Geneva should start the week a bit unsettled, with clouds and some showers on Monday and Tuesday, before turning much warmer, sunnier and more stable from Wednesday onwards. Day temperatures are expected to move from around 17–19°C / 63–65°F early in the week to 24–27°C / 75–81°F later in the week. Humidity looks moderate, roughly 50–65% during the day, while wind should generally be light to moderate, mostly around 10–15 km/h / 6–9 mph. Overall: a cool, slightly wet start, then increasingly warm and good playing conditions.

Player Quotes

Djokovic, 2025: "There’s a bit more altitude here so the serve is big and I think that was my strongest shot today."

Arnaldi, 2025: "I'm super happy to win. It was difficult conditions — the ball was bouncing a lot. I stepped up and pushed through. He's a very good player, so it was tough. I never played here before, so it was tough at the start. Like I said, the ball was bouncing a lot, so I had to adjust."

Ruud 2022: “It was a tough match today against Opelka like it always is. The serve he has is incredibly difficult to return here, with the altitude.”

Jarry, 2019: “The best thing was my serve. It was a hot day, so the bounce was really high and the court is not so big, so my serve was really effective. If he hit a medium return, I was very quick to take my forehand and keep being aggressive and keep having the point on my side.”

Gojowczyk, 2019: "Normally clay isn't my best surface, I usually prefer hard court and grass. But here it is quite quick and that helps my aggressive game."

Summary

As the statistics show, although it is a clay tournament, Geneva is played under fast conditions due to the altitude.

We have seen players like Fritz, Opelka, Shapovalov, and Johnson reach the semifinals here in recent years. Hurkacz made the final in 2025. Even a clay-averse player like the German Gojowczyk, who plays flat and has never hit a topspin shot in his life , made it to the final here in 2018.

If we are going to bet on aggressive players who perform well on fast courts, it is preferable to do so if they play during the day, and if the weather is sunny, even better. Over a heavy court, despite the ball traveling faster at altitude, they may face more difficulties.

The conditions will be warmer and therefore a bit quicker in the second part of the week.
