Bucharest 2026 - ATP 250 Preview
(31 March - 5 April) Bucharest's clay posts the lowest first-serve points won on the ATP Tour — 64.8%. With cool, wet weather forecast, conditions will be even heavier this week.
Here is my Preview of the ATP 250 of Bucharest (Tiriac Open by Unicredit).
Qualifying has still not been completed because of the rain. Saturday’s entire schedule was washed out, so the first qualifying matches had to be played on Sunday instead. Today, the two remaining qualifying matches are expected to finish, and all main-draw matches are scheduled to get underway.
The tournament was held in 2024 and 2025, but it hadn’t been played since 2016 before that.
Bucharest is played on a very slow clay.
Speed Data
If we take the data of 2024 and 2025, these are the numbers:
- 64.8% Points won on the First Serve
- 71.5% Service Holds
- 0.20 Aces/Game
- 0.14 TB/Set
Although we only have two years of data to compare, if we benchmark it against the five-year numbers from all ATP Tour events, that 64.8% is the lowest figure of all — in other words, it sits at the very bottom of the ranking.
Bucharest is located about 50 metres over the sea level.
Weather
This week in Bucharest is expected to be cool, somewhat unsettled, and at times breezy. Temperatures should mostly sit in the 51–63 °F (11–17 °C) range, so conditions are likely to feel chilly. There is risk of rain during the week, and wind could also be a factor at times, with breezes generally around 8–18 mph (13–29 km/h). Humidity should mostly stay in the 55–75% range, likely a bit higher during wetter periods. Overall, conditions do not look especially harsh, but they may be slightly uncomfortable and somewhat variable.
So it looks the conditions will tend to make the courts even slower.
Players Quotes
Tabilo, 2024: “It was a difficult match as he was playing well but I stayed calm and took my opportunities. The conditions were very difficult today, very slow.”
Barrere, 2024: “I feel very good. I've been here since last Friday. I like the tournament. The weather was not good the last two days. I played really well. The beginning was not easy so I'm really happy to be in QF. The conditions were pretty slow due to the weather. I like it. I hope it will be the same this afternoon.”
Fonseca, 2024: “Today was a great fight. I knew the court will be heavy because of the rain. Yesterday we only played one game and he started by breaking me. I knew he was an experienced player. I needed to fight to the end. I'm very happy with this win. I'm just thankful for the wild card. It means a lot to me.”
Summary
The conditions at this clay-court tournament are very slow. Among the slowest conditions in the circuit.
In addition, the humid and rainy weather expected for most of the week will make the conditions even heavier.
