Barcelona 2026 - ATP 500 Preview

(13 - 19 April) Barcelona ranks among the slowest clay courts on tour. Mild weather this week keeps conditions heavy — a clear edge for patient baseliners.

Barcelona tournament with the trophy

Here is my Preview of the Barcelona ATP 500 tournament (Barcelona Banc Sabadell Open).

Barcelona is played on very slow clay courts.

Speed Data

These are the stats of the last five years:

  • 66.3% Points won on the First Serve
  • 72.0% Service Holds
  • 0.26 Aces/Game
  • 0.11 TB/Set

Barcelona has the 3rd slowest conditions if we take the average of the last 5 years. Only Bucharest and Buenos Aires have proved to be slower.

Past Winners

2025: Rune d. Alcaraz

2024: Ruud d. Tsitsipas

2023: Alcaraz d. Dimitrov

2022: Alcaraz d. Carreño Busta

2021: Nadal d. Tsitsipas

Nadal has won this tournament 12 times.

Weather

This week in Barcelona, daytime conditions look very favorable: temperatures will range between 17–22°C (63–72°F), starting slightly cooler and unsettled early in the week before turning warm and stable; humidity will generally sit around 55–70% during the day, slightly higher during early-week showers; winds will be light to moderate, around 10–18 km/h (6–11 mph); and after some rain on Monday, the week quickly shifts to dry, sunny, and pleasant conditions from Tuesday onwards.

Player Quotes

Davidovich, 2025: "Throughout the week, they added more clay and the bounces have been a bit tricky, but you have to adapt. There was a key moment where I had a bad bounce, but it was a fit of anger, sometimes I say things I don't mean. Of course, it's not like Marrakech, but I was very heated over that point."

Tsitsipas, 2024: "The conditions were quite heavy, and I had to really work hard for the points, took a lot of effort out there."

Ruud, 2024: "The clay is a bit different here in Barcelona. It’s a really good clay court. Nothing to complain about. But it’s a bit more lively, a bit drier, bouncy.. when it comes to clay they aren’t that many differences but you can feel it here and there. Luckily we’re playing with the same ball we had in Monte Carlo."

Sinner 2023: "Madrid is slippery and there is the altitude. These are very particular conditions. Monte Carlo was very fast this year. Here the central court is especially slower; it is quite heavy. But every tournament is different. I like playing here, it's always nice."

Summary

Barcelona is among the slowest conditions in the circuit.

Mild weather is expected this week, not hot, which will contribute to slow conditions on the already slow courts of Barcelona.

So, if the weather conditions do not change, average clay conditions this year, obviously favourable for clay courters. And probably less chances for those players who prefer quicker surfaces and that, with the sun and heat, and a big serve, could have more chances.
