Adelaide (ATP 250)

(12 - 17 January, 2026) Adelaide ranks among the fastest outdoor tournaments. Dry heat makes the ball fly, but night sessions bring slower, lower-bounce conditions.

"The Adelaide ATP 250 2026 has concluded. Machac claimed the title defeating Humbert in the final. Below is my original tournament preview."

This is my preview of the ATP 250 of Adelaide.

The Adelaide International tournament is played on Outdoor Hard courts.

This tournament took place from 1990 to 2008. After a break, it wasn't held again until 2020.

Statistics

These are the Stats for 2023, 2024 and 2025 (3-year average):

  • 73.1% of points won on the first serve
  • 80.9% service holds
  • 0.62 aces per game
  • 0.18 tiebreaks per set.

With the exception of 2024, the percentage of points won on first serve in the last years has been close to 74%, which is a very high figure. The 71% recorded in 2024 pulls down the average.

If we look at the Tennis Abstract Rating from last season, it shows a Surface Speed of 1.10, indicating medium-high speed conditions.

Player statements

Korda, 2025: "It’s hot and fast here; it feels like home."

Kokkinakis, 2024: “When the balls get super slow it feels like there's a ton of time on return. He was rolling them on his sweat to try to speed them up a bit. The balls, after a few rallies, get super slow and they turn into lemons. It makes it tough, especially when it's colder, to get much power on the ball.”

Lehecka, 2024: "I am very confident on this court with in these conditions,” said Lehecka. “I like it very fast.”

Lehecka, 2024: “It is always a bit different when you play under the roof, it helped us to adjust. It is not easy to play in these conditions, it's humid and we are sweating a lot.”

Djokovic 2023 (after beating Medvedev): “It plays differently at night. The ball bounces less, and it's a bit slower. It helps when you're playing big servers; you can return their serve better. He is one of the best servers in the world, definitely on these courts where it is quick, and the ball skids through, it is tough to play him.” "He was serving really well. Fast, big serves, it is difficult to play this kind of serve on a court that is really fast. If you are serving well, it's tough to break the serve of a big server. Two tiebreakers were probably the most realistic score in these circumstances."

Cilic 2022: "The courts here are quite quick. I feel that's good for my game. You need to see the ball quickly. I need to see the ball better tomorrow."

Bublik, 2020: "It's hot, really hot!". Especially in these conditions, you don't really care about how you play, you only care if you survive."

Heliovaara (doubles player), 2022: "The courts were surprisingly fast and low-bouncing, and they didn’t react as sensitively as, say, the newly painted courts at Melbourne Park. The wind was also quite strong from time to time, which made it difficult to find rhythm."

Heliovaara, 2020: “The conditions here are very similar to those in Melbourne. The air is dry and hot, quite windy, but the courts and balls are just the same as elsewhere in Australia.”.

Summary

The conditions are very quick, among the fastest outdoor hard courts in the circuit, suitable for the big hitters. The ball flies a lot through the air and skids through the court. But in the night session, the ball bounces less, and the court is slower.

As Auckland, Adelaide tends to be quite windy.

The conditions seem to be a bit faster than in Auckland, especially if, as it seems, the weather is dry and hot. The serve will be fundamental.
